Japan’s Indo-Pacific Strategy amidst Growing US-China Rivalry

Japan has promoted the Open and Free Indo-Pacific Strategy (FOIP) at a time of growing US-China rivalry. While the US is Japan’s indispensable ally sharing core values and strategic interests, China has been Japan’s largest trading partner for a decade. Under President Donald Trump, Washington has taken a tougher stance towards China. This lecture will argue that Prime Minister Shinzo Abe's foreign policy has struck a balance between two extremes, namely, between war with and appeasement toward China.
