The fear of witches runs throughout Chinese history, but its study has been made difficult by a lack of detailed sources.  In this talk, part of the Sinological Methods seminar, historian Barend ter Haar introduces his current research into witchcraft in China from the third  century BCE up to the recent present, demonstrating how he uncovers sources for a subject obscured and distorted in the written record.
