This presentation first navigates the now sprawling secondary literature on China’s and Road Initiative (BRI). One productive strand of analysis conceptualizes BRI as a moment of “planetary urbanization” (in which the urban is apprehended as a process rather than a form or place). I examine how this may be supplemented by approaching BRI as a form of urban geopolitics, in which urban frontiers are key vectors. To this end, the presentation draws on the Cambodian case.
