Aaron Proffitt is Assistant Professor of Japanese Studies, University at Albany, State University of New York. His research focuses on the scholar-monk Dōhan (1179-1252), Pure Land and Esoteric Buddhism in medieval Japan, and East Asian Buddhist theories of ritual speech (mantra, spells, etc.) and the afterlife.
