Facilitating China’s economic rise is one of the central issues for the world economy. Based on his recent book Eclipse, the author will argue that strategic distrust between the world’s major economies can be overcome. Both sides will have to re-assess their current strategies. The United States will need to empower not contain China in the economic realm, eschewing regional and bilateral approaches for multilateral ones. China cannot afford to follow Deng Xioaping’s advice to lie low for several decades. It will have to contribute to strengthening the international economic system, recognizing that in this course lies self-interest.
Immediately following the lecture, Dr. Subramanian will be signing copies of his recent book, Eclipse: Living in the Shadow of China’s Economic Dominance. Copies will be available for purchase at the event for $20.00 (cash or check only).
