Event
Toward an Anti-Racist Examination of East Asia, Part 2: Lessons from the Language Classroom
Center for East Asian Studies Dialogue
This is the second event in our CEAS on Race series. Following last September’s rich interdisciplinary overview of structural inequities in the study of East Asia, we offer a more focused discussion of specific initiatives in the East Asian language classroom aimed at facilitating an anti-racist examination of East Asia. On the front lines of cultivating intercultural competence, language pedagogy can potentially play a critical role in challenging persistent inequities. “Voices from the Language Classroom” will feature the directors of our Chinese-, Japanese- and Korean-language programs speaking on what has and hasn’t worked in their efforts to promote diversity and equity in the language classroom.
Speakers:
Mien-hwa Chiang, Director, Penn Chinese Language Program
Tomoko Takami, Director, Penn Japanese Language Program
Haewon Cho, Director, Penn Korean Language Program
